    2 . VPS FAQ’s

    What is VPS Server?

A virtual private server (or VPS) is created through a process of virtualization, by which a virtual replica of a physical server is created. A VPS is like having access to your own personal server, one with your own allocated number of resources and a pre-installed operating system of your choice. Because it is self-contained, you have full control of your server setup, and are responsible both for updates and security. You can also choose to opt for our managed service.

Why you need a VPS Server?

If you know your site is going to enjoy a high amount of traffic, a VPS is a safer option over shared hosting options. They’re also a great option if you have a number of websites to host and want to enjoy the ability to tweak their setup behind the scenes just the way you like it.

A VPS server works hard when it is needed, with burstable memory that kicks in when site traffic picks up. As well as this, you can reap the benefits of dedicated bandwidth, CPU, disk space and RAM. VPS servers remove any limitations you have in shared hosting, allowing you complete flexibility but we do still give some support, should you need it.

How to secure my VPS Server?

All data is stored on a RAID10SAN, and if you have backups enabled for your system these will be stored away from the primary data store, adding extra peace of mind. We recommend configuring IP tables on all VPS servers, as well as keeping up to date with patches to keep your systems secure.

    How to connect to VPS?

You can connect to your VPS either through SSH and Putty, or Remote Desktop.

    What is Cloud Server?

Cloud Server can be thought of as a service rather than a limited server. Our infrastructure creates the Cloud which you can rent according to your needs. As our Cloud Serer is not limited as such; you can easily scale up or down the amount of server processing you need.

How exactly does Cloud Server work?

Cloud Server is generated by our servers and infrastructure across several of our Datacentre’s. As its resources use several physical servers at once, on the occasion that a fault occurs and a server shuts down, the cloud can be seamlessly transitioned without service interruption.

How to upgrade an existing cloud server?

It's very easy to upgrade a cloud server, just buy some additional nodes, and then assign them to the machine. The system will shut down your machine, upgrade it, and bring it back up automatically.

How long will an upgrade take?

This depends entirely on how much data is stored on your system. Upgrades are usually completed within 20-30 minutes, but downgrades can take up to an hour.

    How to allocate resources?

Each cloud server is made up of one or more units called nodes. A node is allocated a guaranteed share of CPU and RAM resources as well as SAN storage space and monthly bandwidth. The more nodes you assign to a cloud server, the more physical resources will be allocated to your system.

How much technical knowledge do I need?

Cloud server systems with SMB are very easy to get up and running with pre-installed software and require very little experience to get started. However, remember that this is not a managed service by default, so you will be responsible for maintaining your server. We therefore recommend that you take the time to gain a basic understanding of server administration.

    Do you offer Managed Services?

SMB does offer as add on option Managed Services plan for additional monthly fee. This gives you pro-active managed support help with the setup and/or management of your cloud server.

What can I do with my cloud server?

You can host any services you like from your cloud server, including web hosting, Rails applications, email application, ecommerce applications or even an Asterisk voice over IP system. You will have root access to your cloud server so there's no limit to what you can run, as long as it doesn't violate our terms of service.

How much can I host from my cloud server?

There is no limit to how many services, domains, or applications you can run from a SMB cloud server. However, you need to make sure you allocate enough resources to deal with the services you expect to provide.

How do you back up data?

Once you have completed your purchase you can log into the SMB console and select one of two options: screenshots or backups. To enable the automatic backups, check the backups option, and the associated monthly fee will be added to your account. You can restore your server to any given backup at any time.

What if I break my cloud server?

If you break your system, you can quickly get it running again, either by restoring a recent backup, or by deleting it and creating a new VM with a clean installation.

    How to change OS?

At any time you can create a new cloud server from any of our plans with respective OS options.

    How secure is my data?

All data is stored on a RAID10 SAN, and if you have backups enabled for your system these will be stored away from the primary data store.

How many IPs do I get?

All systems come automatically configured with StaticIP address.

    Do you provide MySQL DBs?

We do not provide centralised database servers, however creating a MySQL cloud server is quick and simple, giving you full control over your database.

Can I change the location of my server?

Yes you can, by contacting our support team. They will be happy to assist and will help you in manually move your server data for you. If you are a new customer and are purchasing on SMB, you can specify before you buy at the time of purchase regarding data migration

    Can I firewall my server?

Absolutely. We recommend configuring iptables on all cloud servers, as well as keeping up-to-date with patches to keep your systems secure. Alternatively you can take an additional hardware firewall for enhanced security

    Are Windows cloud servers available?

Yes, you can choose from Windows 2012 & 2016 SE.

    How do you bill?

All charges are monthly and will be automatically paid from your card, and services can be cancelled at any time. Invoices are available through the web interface.

What type of hardware will my VPS be hosted on?

Our hardware configurations scale to address the needs of the users on each node. Your account will be provisioned on the following hardware configurations:

  • Intel Xeon Quad Core Processors with RAID10 configuration
  • How long will it take to set up my account?

Generally, your VPS hosting account will be provisioned and ready to use minutes after you have placed your order. If your order is flagged by our fraud prevention system, our billing department will contact you within 24 hours to approve your order and complete the account creation process. Please ensure that your billing information is entered accurately and avoid using e-mail addresses from free e-mail providers to minimize delays.

    How is bandwidth usage calculated?

Upstream and downstream bandwidth which leaves any VPSLink datacentre is tracked and aggregated for all IP's registered to your account. Transfer between VPS's in a single datacentre does not count toward usage.

    Can I pay quarterly? Yearly?

During the sign up process the option for a 1 year payment is available with a10% discount Additionally, a prepay can be made in your MY customer portal to keep a credit on your account. Available money in prepay will be deducted as your monthly invoices are generated. Prepaying does not offer any discounts on your monthly fee.

How many IPs come with the VPS? How many can I have?

Each VPS comes with 1 Static IP address. With IP justification you can have up to 5 additional IPs on your VPS or Cloud. You can purchase additional IPs directly in our Portal.

Which VPS Hosting Control Panels are Available?

Each VPS is managed through a Control Panel tool, often referred to as a virtualization panel. This tool allows you to restart the whole VPS or separate services, such as HTTP, MySQL, etc, to monitor and manage all running processes and to check the consumed and the available system resources. As you will have full root access, you can also install server-side applications that may be required for some script-driven platforms to run, view detailed traffic statistics and history of all the tasks running on the VPS. One of the best features of the virtualization panel is that you can use it to easily install a hosting Control Panel on the VPS.

There are a lot of different hosting Control Panels, but a few of them are more popular ones like cPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin. If you purchase a VPS, you can chose the Control Panel provider is offering, or you can install your own.

What is the difference between Standard VPS and Cloud Server?

With Standard VPS hosting, your instance runs in one server along a few others, with minimal to no hardware redundancy. Cloud Server on the other end is to create abundant hardware redundancy, ensure fastest load time and 100% uptime.

What are the advantages of VPS Hosting?

With VPS Hosting, you have complete isolation. This means that no matter what other users might be doing on the server, your VPS package will be unaffected. With root access, you can install whatever applications you require. VPS also gives you guaranteed resources, so no matter what the CPU, RAM, HDD and Bandwidth allocated to your VPS package will always be available for your applications.

What is the difference between shared hosting and VPS?

You may consider the difference as the one between a dedicated server and usual shared hosting. With VPS you receive all the power of a dedicated hosting with the ability to have own set of services and customizable disk space. With shared hosting you have limited administrative access and can't customize software configurations while with VPS you can perform any actions from you control panel and don't need to contact technical support with every single request.

What software can be installed on my VPS?

Since a VPS is functioning like a dedicated server you can install almost any software products you want. You receive full administrative/root control of your VPS, therefore can set it up as you need. Though you would need to consider the physical limitations (disk space, RAM, CPU) of your VPS package. Also prohibited: Pirated/hacking software. Warez sites. Distribution of any copyright infringement materials. Any material considered to be illegal by the law. Child pornography. Spamming activity

This is your dedicated server. You will have complete root access control over the server. SMB does not access customer server unless for specific purpose after getting necessary approvals

What if I want to upgrade my server plan?

Customers can upgrade to any server plan at any time with additional fees.

Can you waive the setup fees, or give a discount if we pre-pay?

Yes! In addition to our everyday low prices, for all server packages we don’t charge set up fees. Discounts can be availed if you prepay for a year in advance.

    Do you allow resellers?

Yes, quite a few of our largest customers are hosting companies who are reselling space on our servers as shared hosting to their clients.

Are dedicated servers supplied with a preinstalled operating system?

Dedicated servers are not delivered with any operating system. As an optional service, our customers may order the basic installation of a typical Linux distribution (usually Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Windows(Additional Cost)). The basic installation of Windows OS in dedicated servers is performed, free of charge, within the monthly licensing fee

Can I install my own software on the dedicated server?

You can install your own software in any extent of your choice. However, we strongly recommend checking whether the end user license agreement of that software permit the product being used in that manner. A typical example of non-conformity are the so-called OEM licenses.

Our standard terms are 30 days' notice for all server cancellations.

    Can you provide gigabit connections?

Yes - we can provide 10 GB connections at additional cost and can provide gigabit vLANs too. However, some hosting companies claim to be providing gigabit connections but then share them, so you're unable to use the full capacity of the port, we do not. If you are looking at gigabit connectivity we would advise checking your current burst rate to see if you're requiring in excess of 100Mbit/s before upgrading.

    Can I have IPv6?

Yes, at additional cost you can get IPv6 addresses.

How many IPs can I use with my server?

Can I change from a dedicated server to another server?

Please contact our sales department to perform a shift from one server product to another. They will in consultation with the technical department consider the feasibility and will then discuss the required steps and eventual outage time with you individually.

How do I order additional features?

If you want to extend the performance and/or the services of your dedicated server, please contact us via the support system in our customer area. Your personal queries can be checked via this route and if necessary we can then make you a new offer.

You have the opportunity of gaining temporary access via a KVM console with limited access. To do so simply open a helpdesk ticket.

Servers from our business range come with KVM access via IPMI as standard.

Do I have to monitor the hardware (e.g. the RAID) myself?

In the event of an outage of your server or individual services you have the opportunity to stay informed through our monitoring system via email or SMS and you can also activate an automatic restart via our reset system. A manual restart of a server by our technicians does, however, only take place if the customer has requested this via the ticketing system.

Monitoring of a RAID is not activated when a server is delivered. If it reports a problem, we contact you and arrange a time to carry out a check.

How do I manage my dedicated server?

The operation is primarily effected via the remote control protocols which are generated by the operating systems. In Linux systems you can use SSH to do this and in Windows systems it’s the remote desktop. If you have ordered administration software, you can conveniently make configurations, such as setting up web space or creating email addresses, through a web-based interface.

What kind of administration interfaces can be installed?

Basically, any administration interface can be installed that is compatible with the installed operating system.

We offer you the admin-software like Plesk and cPanel. Only for these will you receive full support from us plus the respective licences needed to operate the software.

    What is managed hosting?

Managed hosting is a type of web hosting service that combines either a shared hosting or VPS hosting platform with a high level of customized support and management. Managed hosting takes a number of different forms, so it's hard to make generalizations about it. But it usually involves some kind of active support for your installed applications, security monitoring, automated backups, software upgrades, and server configuration tweaks. Some managed hosting providers have specialized services for one or another specific applications, such as WordPress. These providers have usually designed their server setup and support structure around the app, so they are able to provide a high level of satisfaction to a very narrow set of users.

    What is a domain name?

A domain name is essentially an electronic address for a website. Every computer on the internet has a unique numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address which is a 4 to 12 digit number. IP addresses are allotted to organisations by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. However, these numbers would be very difficult for an internet user to memorise and are therefore twinned with more memorable domain names. This means that an internet user can access a particular website IP address by using the domain name rather than a string of numbers. Domain names are also used in e-mail addresses e.g. user@smb2host.com.

When a registered trade mark is owned, is there an automatic right to register corresponding domain names?

Domain names are registered on a "first come, first served" basis. Having a registered trade mark does not entitle the trade mark owner to registration of corresponding domain names. It is advisable to secure all necessary domain names as soon as possible. Currently there are hundreds of different domain name suffixes available making it important to prioritise those that are most important to secure.

Can any name be registered as a domain name?

Prior to registering a domain name, it is advisable to carry out a number of checks to ensure that a third party does not have any rights in the particular name. For example, general searches on the internet, on Companies House and the Trade Marks Registration held by the Indian Intellectual Property Office ("India IPO"), to ascertain whether a third party is trading under the same name that is to be registered. When registering a domain name where a third party has rights in the name, they may be able to bring proceedings on the grounds of abusive registration, passing off and/or trade mark infringement.

How do I unlock my domain? Why won't my domain unlock?

You can unlock the domain name from within your smb2host.com account. Remember, per ICANN regulations you cannot unlock domain at least 60 days from the registration date and transfer it to another registrar.

Where do I find the authorization/EPP code?

After the outgoing transfer is complete, it might look like the domain is still in your smb2host.com account for up to a week. This is only a ghost image and nothing to worry about. These can occur due to a process that verifies that the outgoing transfer was successful before the domain name is removed. You will not be able manage the domain in your smb2host.com account during this time.

    Internal Transfers

How do I internally transfer a domain name to another smb2host.com account?

You will need to access the account the domain name is in, as well as have the account id of the account you are transferring the domain name to.

Where do I find the account id?

The account id can be found on the domain dashboard from within the account.

    1. Log in to your smb2host.com account.

    2. Click My Domains and click Domainname.

    3. The account code is below the Username on the top right of the page.

My domain name is listed as "inactive." Why?

Any domain name that does not have at least two name servers associated with it is listed as "Inactive." The inactive status means that the domain will not propagate to the zone file, and will not be usable on the Internet. Once you add two name servers through your registrar, the Inactive status will be taken off automatically, and the domain name will propagate correctly.

What is an authorization code (auth code), and where can I get mine?

The authorization code is a 6- to 16-characters code assigned by the registrar at the time the domain name was created. The auth code is basically a password for the domain. Auth codes are an extra security measure, ensuring that only the owner of the domain can make transfers. If you do not know your auth code, you can obtain it from your registrar. Registrars are contractually required to provide the auth code upon the request by the registrant. Sponsoring registrars can obtain the auth code for their sponsored domains by sending an EPP command to the registry. Registrars are only able to obtain auth codes for the domain names they sponsor.

How do I make updates to my domain record, or add nameservers?

To make a change, you must send a request to your registrar, who will then put the request through to the Registry.

How long should it take for my registration to appear in the WHOIS?

The WHOIS will generally be updated within five (5) minutes of a change being received. If there is a significant delay, you may want to call your registrar's customer support line.

How soon can I start using my domain name?

Once the registry has been updated, the information in our database is shared with the Internet's zone files worldwide. This sharing process is called "propagation," because the new information about your domain spreads or propagates across the Internet. The zone files are propagated frequently, every day of the year. We cannot control the rate at which the millions of name servers on the Internet are updated, but generally your domain should be available to Internet users within a very short period.

How do I change the information associated with a domain name I've registered?

You must change your domain name information — such as contact information — through your registrar. Your registrar then submits these changes to the registry. The speed at which your change is made — and therefore the speed at which it shows up in the registry and the WHOIS — depends on your registrar. It is important to note that each registrar may affect information about only the domain names for which it is responsible.

What are "created on" dates and what do they mean?

Each domain name record in the WHOIS has a "created on" date, which is the date that the record was created in the registry database.

What is the Redemption Hold Period (RHP)?

Following the deletion of a name by the sponsoring registrar, if this registrar does not request that the name be restored during the 30-day RGP, then the name enters a Redemption Hold Period, or RHP. RHP lasts for five (5) days, and during this time the name is locked. After five (5) days, the name will become available for re-registration. Once the name enters RHP, the prior registrant cannot renew it.

If a name is in RHP, the Status field in the WHOIS will show the name as "Pending Delete - Scheduled for Release."

How do I redeem my name if it has been placed in Redemption Hold Period RGP?

If your domain name has been placed in RGP, it is because your registrar requested to delete it.

If you wish to renew the name, YOU MUST CONTACT YOUR REGISTRAR IMMEDIATELY.

The registrar of record for the name (as indicated in the WHOIS) is the ONLY registrar who can restore the name. Please note that your registrar may charge a fee for the restoration of the name.

Why is my registrar charging me to redeem my name through RGP?

The registry does not determine the fees that registrars charge their customers. However, the registrar incurs extra costs each time it invokes the RGP process. Registrars may charge a fee to restore a name through RGP at their discretion. You should contact your registrar to inquire about the fee being charged.

What are common terms found in the WHOIS Database?
  • Domain Status :
  • Normally operating domains have a status of "OK" or "Active." Other status values detail pending operations and restrictions regarding the domain.

  • OK :
  • This is the nominal status value for a domain object at all times, whether or not the domain has pending operations or prohibitions.

  • New :
  • This is the nominal status for a newly created domain object. The domain can be modified unless locked.

  • Active :
  • The domain can be modified and appears in a zone file. This is the nominal status for a domain object once it has been published in a zone.

  • Locked :
  • The domain cannot be transferred, renewed, or deleted. (Though the status value can be changed.) Hierarchical and associated objects cannot be added or removed from the domain object. Domain names involved in Sunrise and other disputes may be locked, subject to registry policies.

  • Hold :
  • The domain will not be published in a zone for DNS resolution. Names without at least two nameservers may be placed on Hold status; in this case submit nameserver data through your registrar.

  • Pending Transfer :
  • A transfer request has been received for the domain, and completion of the request is pending. The domain cannot be renewed, deleted, or updated while in this state.

  • Pending Delete :
  • A delete request has been received from the registrar for the domain. The domain has been removed from the zone, but has not yet been purged from the registry database. The domain cannot be renewed, deleted, transferred, or updated while in this state.

  • Client Hold :
  • The domain will not be published in a zone for DNS resolution. This status is placed on the domain by the registrar.

  • Client Lock :

  • ID :
  • : Each database record has a single field (its "ID") that uniquely identifies it. The ID is shown in parenthesis following the record's name.

  • Name :
  • Most records will have a name field. Those that do not have a name field will display "[No name]" in their record output.

  • Sponsoring Registrar :
  • The registrar that currently administrates the name on behalf of the registrant. If the domain name was registered by a reseller, the reseller's name will not appear in the Sponsoring Registrar field. Instead, you will see the reseller's registrar.

  • Trademark Information :
  • Owners of registered trademarks and service marks have been allowed to register their corresponding domain names as a way of protecting their intellectual property. In such cases, the domain record will note the mark name, the date the registered mark was registered, in which country, and the registration number.

What do I do if I have a problem with my registrar?

First, try to resolve the issue with the registrar directly. Registrars are required to have customer support mechanisms to assist you. Your registration agreement is a contract between you and your registrar.
